Okay, so I had this sort of weird journal entry idea about MrEnter that I've wanted to write about for a little while. It's just some weird little observation I had. Okay, so here's a story that I think is a good illustration of two points I'd like to make:

1) MrEnter is not very good at criticising cartoons.

2) A lot of criticism of his criticism is also not very good.

Okay, so here's the story. Awhile back, I remember re-watching an old video - MrEnter's 'Animated Atrocities' review of the SpongeBob episode "Squid Baby." The plot is that SpongeBob and Patrick accidentally cause Squidward to get some sort of head trauma which causes him to revert to the mentality of a baby. At one point in the review, MrEnter criticizes the episode, going on what he jokingly calls a "Nerd Rant" about a joke where a doctor diagnoses Squidward with "Head-Go-Boom-Boom-itis."

Enter's issue with the joke is that he perceives it as an example of cartoons or people or whatever misusing the suffix "-itis" as a catchall for any sort of medical issue.

While scrolling through the comment section of this review, I came across a random comment where some dude took issue with Enter's criticism of that joke, defending it by saying some variation of the classic "it's just a joke" defense.

Of course, this is a meaningless defense of the joke. Simply pointing out that it's a joke doesn't mean the joke can't be criticized or whatever he was trying to say. But then something else occurred to me. Or to be fair another comment might have pointed this out and I'm misremembering. I'm really not sure.

But the thing that either occurred to me or someone else pointed was that there was another actual problem with Enter's criticism of the joke. And it seems so obvious looking. In "Squid Baby," Squidward's head was in fact inflamed. Squidward literally had Head-Go-Boom-Boom-itis.

Now to be clear, this isn't me harping on a minor point in an old review or harping on a random comment on some old review. This memory just stuck out to me as a perfect example of Enter's problems as a reviewer and the problems of a lot of his critics. But thankfully, nowadays, he gets a lot more constructive criticism than he used to.

And just FYI, I'm not jumping on any sort anti-MrEnter bandwagon here. I've had issues with his reviews pretty much ever since I started watching him. I think I always liked the idea of his reviews more than the reviews themselves. I unsubscribed from him around a year ago. The video that made me decide to unsubscribe was his review of that Sabrina episode. It wasn't even an awful review. There were a few good points. But there were enough bad points that made me decide that I just don't like his videos that much anymore. Me unsubscribing didn't have anything to do with Nick-O-Rama either. I actually liked the few reviews from it I watched. But I haven't seen a lot of the most infamous ones. And also, I unsubscribed before all the anti-mask crap.

Okay, that's all. See ya.

Well, it's been a while. Hasn't it? But anyway, I'm going back and watching every episode of this series for an Out of Context twitter account I'm doing: twitter.com/MeetsOf. I watched this one a while ago and wanted to do it. So let's get to it. This is Everything Good About Girl Meets Father (Girl Meets World).

  • I love how the older girl Riley and Maya are watching just acknowledges them and lets Riley use her eyelash curler. I feel like that's kind of a subversion of expectations or something.
  • Riley's reaction to getting that eyelash curler stuck in her eye is just well, classic Riley is what it is.
  • Lucas killing Maya with kindness. That's it. No explanation needed.
  • Love that theme song.
  • Lol. Cory actually printed out Auggie a card that says "Auggie Spy." And then another that said "Auggie Super Spy."
  • You know, sometimes the comedy with Auggie really isn't that good. But when he's funny, he's REALLY funny.
  • Sabrina Carpenter does some really good dramatic acting in this classroom scene.
  • And a good use of a comedic relief moment. The trick is you have to let the dramatic moment play out. And having the joke be one that comes naturally from the serious moment is always good too.
  • Danielle Fishel nails that facial expression in that reaction shot. Funny stuff.
  • That line from Cory about how traditions end is sad because of how true it is.
  • And man, Ben Savage has grown into quite a good actor.
  • They do a good job with making this father/daughter-like relationship between Maya and Cory feel genuine.
  • Still getting in a few hilarious jokes despite this arguably being one of the more consistently serious episodes of the show.
  • A little subtlety with how Maya doesn't have to explain everything to them certainly doesn't hurt.
  • I'm not crying you're crying.
  • Actually, that's a pretty perfect way to handle the concepts of traditions. Are they always worth keeping? It depends. Is it a good tradition or not? Good message.

Win Count: 16. Rating: 8/10

So, :iconspongey444: suggested I do one of these for a Disney sitcom show. And he also suggested I do one for something I dislike. So how about Bunk'd? Let's see what good we can find in the first episode.

  • Hmm, the opening establishing shots are actually filmed very well. They look nice and do a good job setting up the, well, setting.
  • The score used in those shots is also a good one.
  • That zoom-out shot of the camp grounds also does an effective job at showing the size of the campsite.
  • No offense to Cameron Boyce, but I don't like Luke. So him not being there is seriously a win.
  • Okay, Emma got a couple of laughs out of me there.
  • Tiffany is still kind of adorable. Win.
  • Ravi: So let me guess, the aliens "probed you"? Jorge: Of course not. They just invited me for brunch. You're weird. Me: Okay, that was pretty funny. Subverted my expected enough. Well done.
  • Okay, so apparently the "love triangle" between Xander, Emma and Hazel is supposed to parallel the "love triangle" between Emma's parents and Freddie Benson's mom. That's kind of clever I guess.
  • Honestly, I think Peyton List does a pretty good job as Emma. She has some solid delivery and can be funny at times.
  • The guy who plays Xander also does some okay acting.
  • I'll say this, Hazel makes a a decent antagonist for a show like this. And they way she sarcastically responded when they found Emma got a laugh from me.
  • A couple nice moments between some of the characters after they "scare off" the "bear."
  • Dang, that Xander is a good singer.
  • And one more win Zuri trying to help Tiffany have fun this summer.
Okay, not a bad win count but still a lot of problems that I didn't mention like bad jokes and some logic problems. Rating: 5/10. Win Count: 14

  • Carly: I'm home. Spencer: I never left. Me: Haha. It's funny because it's true.
  • Man, I love how they keep getting scared by the drawing of the Jack-o-lantern.
  • Lol. That face Spencer makes when he sees the huge pumpkin and then looks at his little carving knife. That's some good comedic acting.
  • Got to love that classic theme song. It's so catchy, fun and upbeat.
  • Jeremy Rowley doesn't get enough credit for his performance as Lewbert. His whole delivery is pretty hilarious.
  • George Costanza's mom is a win.
  • I love the subversion of expectations with how Sam reacts to Freddie's costume.
  • Spencer apparently makes onion rings with a chainsaw.
  • Remember when Sam used to be a funny jerk instead of just a jerk?
  • You got to appreciate how this show actually has a realistic explanation for how they're able to have the technology to do a web show.
  • And not having them overdo it with the budget is nice too.
  • The creepy score they use here is a pretty good one.
  • This scene has a good mixture of being funny and kind of genuinely creepy.
  • Props to whoever actually went through the trouble of carving a face into that giant pumpkin, or whatever that is.
  • Lol. These trick-or-treaters are savage af.
  • That little girl's reaction to Spencer giving her ice cubes is PRICELESS.
  • Having them show the shots of Carly and Sam through the night-vision filter is a nice touch.
  • Spencer: Never forget to buy candy on Halloween. Me: Dats a good message.

This one was actually funnier than I remember. I give it a 7.5 out of 10. Win count: 18
